How Do You Keep Your Engineers Ahead Of Schedule?

You’ve just raised your funding and now the work (and pressure) mount. If your team doesn’t execute, you’ll be just another failed startup investors won’t fund again.

I know exactly how real that pressure is. One of our investors, Donald Ventures, insisted on a tranche in our deal terms. We’d get $6 million up front, but we’d only receive the other $6 million if we launched five products within a year.

That fear drove our discipline. We announced five products with three months to spare, and we received the second $6 million tranche without a problem.

There was a lot I learned from that experience, and the experience of helping startup CEOs grow their companies.

I realized there are five killer management mistakes you don’t want to make. We made one of these mistakes which I’ll explain in a bit. So let’s start with number one on our list.

1. You don’t have good people.

I don’t care what schedule methodology you use it will not matter if you don’t have really good people to execute your plan. You will likely fail.

Mediocre people won’t give mediocre results, they will give you horrible results. Your ability to recruit a great team starts with you and your co-founder(s).
