As a startup, CEO, you’ll almost always have more to do than you’ll have time to get things done. So the challenge is what should you focus on and what should you let go?

Drawing on my experience successfully growing businesses to over $100 million per year in revenue, I will walk you through this evolution, how a CEO’s focus changes as the company grows, and how you can make sure you’re always working on what matters most.

These first couple of steps will cover the founding phase where it’s you plus maybe a few other team members. The first step in this phase is

1. Divide and conquer mode

When I started my company, it was just me and my co-founder, so what did we do? I developed the overall business plan, pitch, pitch deck, and strategy and your own, develop the engineering plan, plus you’re also the janitor, the admin, and everything else in between.

This sounds simple enough and it is simple. However, the way you work together at this stage sets the fabric for how your company will evolve over time.

For example, we talked every day about how things were going. The talks were informal, but this started the process of building trust between me and the team, even if it was just a team of two.
